Explore the Land
There is a very small loop of trail on Land Trust property that is part of the Town’s Old Rifle Range trail system. At the western corner of this parcel is a point of land that extends into Kennedy’s Pond. The pond was created by damming Second Division Brook near Harrington Avenue; much of it is surrounded by a tall pine forest. As Kennedy’s Pond has aged, its value for swimming has declined and its habitat value has increased. The water is shallow and full of waterlilies with moderate fish activity that attracts herons and eagles. Occasionally, evidence of beavers– remnants of chewed wood or cut highbush blueberry–can be found. The property is full of maples, pines, and oaks with lichen and mosses.
History of Preservation
This land was donated by Patti and Pat Navarro in memory of Patti’s grandparents, John and Elsie Kennedy, former owners of the South Bridge Boat House and longtime Concord residents. Elsie helped found the SuAsCo Watershed Association and often swam in Hatshop Pond (now Kennedy’s Pond). Patti and John’s memory of Elsie lives on in this parcel of land abutting Kennedy’s Pond.
